Installation

Installers for macOS, Windows and Linux, the two build variants, getting past the unsigned-app warning and building from source.

Choosing what to download

Every release ships six installers — three operating systems × two variants:

OSFile
macOS (Apple Silicon)tolearn_<version>_aarch64.dmg
Windows 10/11 x64tolearn_<version>_x64_en-US.msi
Debian / Ubuntu x64tolearn_<version>_amd64.deb

Add -with-speech to the name for the variant that recognises speech: it carries whisper.cpp and the ggml-small-q5_1 weights, which is the whole difference in size — about 9 MB against 187 MB. Everything else is identical; in the base variant the voice exam screen is visible and disabled.

Install exactly one of the two. Both are the same application with the same identifier dev.tolearn.app, so two of them installed side by side would argue over which one opens a tolearn:// link. Switching between them is safe: the data lives outside the bundle and survives.

macOS 10.13 is enough for the base variant; the speech variant needs 10.15.

macOS

Open the .dmg, drag the app into Applications.

The build is unsigned and unnotarised, so the first launch is refused with “cannot be opened because the developer cannot be verified”.

  1. Press Done in that dialog — not “Move to Trash”.
  2. System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll to the bottom: “tolearn was blocked from use because it is not from an identified developer” → Open Anyway.
  3. Confirm in the dialog that follows. Later launches are normal.

Windows

Run the .msi. SmartScreen will say “Windows protected your PC” — More info → Run anyway, then follow the installer.

Linux

Debian and Ubuntu need WebKitGTK and GTK 3:

sudo apt install libwebkit2gtk-4.1-0 libgtk-3-0
sudo apt install ./tolearn_<version>_amd64.deb

If the window opens blank, it is compositing in the WebView:

WEBKIT_DISABLE_COMPOSITING_MODE=1 tolearn

Checking the URL scheme

The app registers tolearn://. To check the registration took:

open 'tolearn://test' # macOS
Start-Process 'tolearn://test' # Windows PowerShell
xdg-open 'tolearn://test' # Linux

Building from source

For anything the installers do not cover — an Intel Mac, ARM Linux, another distribution — or if you would rather not run an unsigned binary.

Toolchain: Rust of the version pinned in rust-toolchain.toml, Node 24, pnpm 10, Tauri CLI 2. System dependencies are the usual Tauri ones: Xcode Command Line Tools on macOS, MSVC Build Tools plus WebView2 on Windows, libwebkit2gtk-4.1-dev, build-essential, libssl-dev, libayatana-appindicator3-dev and librsvg2-dev on Debian/Ubuntu.

git clone https://github.com/n0sfer666/tolearn.git
cd tolearn
pnpm -C ui install --frozen-lockfile
cd app && cargo tauri build

The speech variant additionally needs the whisper.cpp submodule and the model weights at app/models/ggml-small-q5_1.bin — the exact commands are in docs/en/install/source.md in the repository.

Where the data lives

WhatPath
Settings, program registry~/.config/tolearn
Notes, page archives, history~/.local/share/tolearn

The same layout on all three systems — on Windows it is C:\Users\<name>\.config\tolearn. XDG_CONFIG_HOME and XDG_DATA_HOME are honoured if set. Learning programs are not copied anywhere: the app remembers the path to the folder you picked.

Uninstalling removes the application only. To remove the data as well:

rm -rf ~/.config/tolearn ~/.local/share/tolearn
